Emerging artist, Heather Taylor, Asheville, NC is a musician you won't soon forget. After fronting a locally-loved Americana band in Rochester, NY, this soulful singer/songwriter now explores elements of folk, blues, americana, roots, & rock in a stripped down presentation accompanied by her octave mandolin. You'll often find Heather with her naturally inviting vocals & hummingbird-like vibrato lighting up rooms with her witty banter amongst original songs in intimate listening settings.
(Long, get to know me!)
I’m Heather Taylor. Thanks for taking an interest in this art and my story.
I was born into a musical family in Rochester, NY. My parents met at The Eastman School of Music. My Dad, a composer and multi-instrumentalist and Mom, originally an oboist turned flautist. I started my first instrument when I was seven, playing the piano and attempting to toot the flute. The first song I learned was “The Hustle”. I picked up other instruments along the way but the main gig was the flute. The flute took me many different places, playing a concerto with my youth orchestra at Eastman Theatre along with traveling to Carnegie Hall and Italy. I went straight to collegiate playing at The Crane School of Music where I pursued a degree in Music Business and Performance. I explored classical pieces to contemporary extended techniques to rock. By the end of college, my body was questioning me. I thought I was going to give up the flute because I could hardly hold it without my hands tingling and going numb (too much tension and practicing and not enough taking care of my body!).
Post- college, I backpacked through Europe, to take a break from music, but fate called and I ended up buying an Irish flute in Dublin and rediscovered improvisation. I’d go down to a nearby river or cow pasture and experiment by playing with the sounds of nature around me eventually gaining enough confidence to “busk” in the cities I went. I was invited to play a show with two Scottish musicians at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival then traveled to Northern Ireland and played with an Irish pub-band. Both were turning points where my love for music came back alive. When I settled in at home, I recorded a CD called “From Dream to Dream” with the world flutes I picked up on my adventure.
My path of wellness and music will always be connected. I started a massage business in 2012 called Massage and Music, where in 2015, I was awarded Rochester’s Best Massage Therapist. I dedicated the business to helping other musicians through massage.
From 2011-2016 I played with the Crawdiddies. Much to my surprise, I became the lead singer and picked up the mandolin. The ‘diddies recorded a CD called “Soul of a Man” and played around town, gaining friends and a following. In 2014 we recorded our second CD called, “Signal in the Static”, which was nominated for Rochester’s Best Original Album in 2015.
I recently recorded a seven-track album, called “House of Healing”. These are songs that I wrote while making the art that you see here today. This fall I’m closing up my business, saying farewell to The Crawdiddies and going on my next adventure. My home will always be Rochester where I learned that creativity could bring love to the world.
Here's to the future! May music continue to ignite passion!!
